Diversity of Indian birds (part-I)

India is one of the most bird-diverse regions of the world as evident from the statistics below:


Species-wise richness - 1318 (out of global 10721, 12.3%)

Genus-wise  richness - 489 (2270, 21.5%)

Family-wise  richness - 109 (249, 43.8%)

Order-wise  richness - 26 (41, 63.4%)


Some regions (and therefore countries) are richer species-wise and order-wise than India. However, family-wise richness (~44%) of Indian birds is exceptionally remarkable.


Above numbers are from the literature and are quite accurate (but not exact).
